Overview

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) is the architect of the Telangana State movement and the first Chief Minister of Telangana (2014–2023). Founder of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) (formerly TRS), he is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, representing the Gajwel constituency. Known for his powerful oratory skills and the landmark “Fast-unto-Death” in 2009 that triggered the formation of the state, he remains the central figure of Telangana politics.

🎓 Early Life & Education

KCR was born in Chintamadaka village, Siddipet district. He completed his primary schooling in his native village and later pursued a Master’s degree in Telugu Literature from Osmania University, Hyderabad. His deep command over the language and literature is often reflected in his political speeches. Before entering active politics, he was known for his interest in agriculture and literature.

📢 Political Journey

• 1970s: Started political career with the Youth Congress.

• 1983: Joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

• 1985–1999: Won four consecutive elections as MLA from Siddipet. Served as Minister for Drought & Relief and Transport.

• 1999–2001: Served as the Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

• 2001: Resigned from TDP and Deputy Speaker post to launch the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) with the single-point agenda of achieving separate statehood.

• 2004–2006: Served as Union Minister for Labour and Employment in the UPA government.

• 2009: Undertook the historic “Fast-unto-Death” (Deeksha), forcing the Central Government to announce the initiation of the Telangana state formation process.

• 2014: Led TRS to a landslide victory and was sworn in as the First Chief Minister of Telangana on June 2, 2014.

• 2018: Dissolved the assembly early and won a second term with a massive majority (88 seats).

• 2023: Currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition.

• Telangana Statehood: Successfully led the 14-year agitation to achieve a separate state.

• Kaleshwaram Project: Constructed the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project to solve the state’s water crisis.

• Rythu Bandhu: Introduced India’s first investment support scheme for farmers, which inspired the central PM-KISAN scheme.

• Mission Bhagiratha: A project that successfully provided safe drinking water to every household in the state.

• Yadadri Temple: Renovated the Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple on a grand scale.
